Madeleine is a maker, mother, writer, and community builder living in Washington, DC. Homeschooled from first grade onward by her mother in the Charlotte Mason tradition, Madeleine’s life and work are deeply informed by Mason’s concept of “the large room”: a metaphor for how curiosity, learning, care, and creativity overlap to foster a rich life. After 12 years of working in arts management and economic development, Madeleine co-founded Merry Pin, an award-winning one-of-a-kind cafe, craft store, and community space dedicated to making creativity accessible to everyone. Through Merry Pin, she has taught 30+ workshops, hosted festivals and events, and launched an indie publishing house to share stories of artists and makers who identify as women and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour). Her debut children’s book, Augusta’s Hands, features the sculptor Augusta Savage and will be published this fall.
